Breakfasts made to order. Prices are good, as is the coffee. Get there early as the place has a lot of local regulars and the best tables get picked first. Get a window seat and you can watch the town wake up. They have a daily special, but don't stop at that. Everything I have tried is good. We have been coming back for well over a decade. It is the place for breakfast when we are in town.

Best Chocolate donuts and cream filled long johns around... Friendly staff that ways has a smile and welcoming.

Stopped in around 1130 for a late breakfast. I did not have the bakery items although they looked fresh and very good. We stopped in the dining room where the kitchen is a cafeteria style line to order food and they will bring it out to you. I had a western omelet with sausage gravy. The eggs were a bit tough and the cheese was raw. It was ok but not great. Others that were with me had a few sandwiches and they enjoyed those. I would come back and try the bakery items

This place was really good. Not familiar with South Bend, we relied on YELP. OMG. We were going to have the Ruben and patty melt, but they are made with marble rye bread. Yuk! The person in front of us had minestrone soup. It looked good. Sooooo, the lady showed us the minestrone soup and clam chowder. That was it. We had that and a grilled cheese sandwich. I NEVER order a grilled cheese sandwich out. The soups were to die for. The grilled cheese was just that. A grilled cheese. The Resturant was clean and the staff was very friendly. I would go back.

The first star is for the price, and the second is for the cute place with friendly staff. Unfortunately, our breakfast pastries were terrible. Tasteless, overly buttery, greasy nothingness. Coffee was pretty meh. Will try Capt Nemo's instead next time.

I was walking by this bakery and I noticed the sign. 2 dozen cookies for 6.00. I dont like sweet but my kids do. We went in and bought the cookies and a loaf of French bread. They even had ginger cookies. Since I am a ginger, I love ginger cookies. They had a couple of ladies working here who looked like they had been there for a while. They were very nice. All in all, a real nice bakery.

Chocolate mounds... See the picture. Yes it tasted as woinderful as it looks. Thats all!

Great food, great atmosphere, and great staff. Its a great way to end a vacation in the beautiful town of south haven. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the price is not 1 dollar sign; definitely is a 2 dollar sign

Take a number--you may be here a while, at least on a Saturday or Sunday morning. But it will be worth the wait. Utilize the time to peruse all of the doughnuts, danishes, muffins, cookies, brownies, breads, and sundry other carby delights. These ladies know their stuff when it comes to doughnuts, particularly the cake varieties. I was hoping to see a bit wider selection, especially for yeast-raised types. But I walked out satisfied with three, two really tasty and one a mild disappointment. While they don't carry an apple fritter per se, they do have a close approximation in the form of a glazed, spiralled, cinnamon-dusted, and apple-studded doughnut. Oh, and they make a pretty good chocolate-chip, oatmeal, and walnut cookie too.

It is ok. Not good not bad. Good waiting and Ok food. Love the bakery. Always will come back!

Great doughnut and pastry selection and open early all week. Everything was quite fresh.

Enjoyed breakfast both times we visited. Looks like a cafeteria, but breakfast was cooked to order and brought to you. The marble rye was excellent.

Best place to get doughnuts. Always fresh. Always a friendly wait staff. Sometimes you will be staying in line for a couple minutes but that just tells you how popular they are. Make sure to grab a number right when you walk in.

Awesome donuts! Some of the best I've ever had. Very moist. Several choices of cake and fried, glazed or frosting or plain or with sprinkles. Excellent almond donuts And cinnamon rolls!

I typically try to avoid bakeries because it seems like I can't control myself when I enter... everything looks and smells so delish, it's too hard for me to decide! This continues to hold true at Golden Brown. We were first introduced to the bakery by the owner of the home we rent in South Haven. She kindly left us some cookies and muffins to enjoy during our stay. My kids loved the cookies (of course, they are kids!) but also devoured the muffins! So later in our stay I walked into town to grab some more goodies. I settled on doughnuts. The sour cream glazed donuts were perfect, and I was impressed at their assortment of flavors. They even had nut covered donuts, which are hard to find (at least I can never find them) and my hubby's favorite. The fritters seemed to look incredibly sinful so I avoided temptation and did not get one. They also have a cafeteria style restaurant attached to the bakery, and a few tables outside.

Went here hoping to get an eclair, but they were out of them. They were out of most of the doughnuts that appealed to me, so I settled on a cheese danish. Honestly, I don't get the hype. It was about as good as any cheese danish, store-bought or otherwise. We also went there for breakfast. I think their breakfast is better than their bakery. The strawberry waffle with whipped cream (which was the special that day) was phenomenal... Best fruit waffle I've ever had. It was the perfect amount of topping and whipped cream and moisture and sweetness and crispness and tartness. I didn't even need the butter and syrup they brought.

I came here yesterday morning as close to opening time as I could to make sure I had best chances for the widest selection. There were people waiting outside before they opened, so that was a good sign on a quiet Sunday. I ended up getting 4 doughnuts and the 2 dozen cookies deal. Everything was great. I'd love to go back soon and get some coffeecakes and more doughnuts and cookies. Unfortunately I didn't realize their cafe was open and we had breakfast somewhere else. Wish I had known because their menu looked good.

Cherry fritters! Yum! My husband said the cake donuts were the best he's ever had. We splurged and got four different kinds of the special brownies and each one was as good as the next. The coffee is okay and very hot! Though we like to try something different every day we couldn't help but going back here three times so far and I predict we'll go again a few times before our trip is over.

We had breakfast in the restaurant which took nearly an hour to get our food. No apologies, no acknowledgment of an issue. Typical diner food aside from better than average bread since it's a bakery.

This was the place to be on the Thursday morning that we went, and for good reason. Good pastries, good cookies (mmm, blueberry chip), and hot coffee drinks. They also have more of a cafe side serving hot food, but we opted to grab our pastries and sit al fresco, enjoying the not yet hot summer day.

  • HJ L.

Yummy boston cream donut but didn't like the raspberry-filled sugar donut.--it was too sweet. They certainly have a variety of donuts, cookies, and baked goods. I'll have to return to try some other goodies.

this review is based solely on the bakery and donuts 1. fresh donuts everyday so get there early 2. scones are awesome 3. bear claws are awesome coffee is not so good, so they need help on working on how to make coffee, capuccino and lattes. great place to take the kids

This is the best bakery I've ever been to. I'm happy to say I have had the pleasure of eating here for 25 years... and the high quality has never changed... summer crazy busy season or dead of winter when on the locals are in town. You are always guaranteed AMAZING long johns (eclairs to some) stuffed with the most incredible cream filling made fresh at the bakery every morning. Bread - perfectly golden brown just like their name. Scones, donuts, cakes, pies... and the cafe breakfast is always freshly made to order. Did I mention the long johns? You can't come to South Haven and not visit THE bakery. It's still a taste of small midwestern town community goodness. And great long johns.

No B&Gs during the week? I had eggs and toast and as good as can be expected. She had a blueberry waffle which she enjoyed very much. Coffee is good.

WOW! Made it for lunch and it was delicious! Chicken noodle soup was the best I've had, portions were generous with a lot of chicken!! I would highly recommend taking the time for lunch and a little dessert afterwards too. I'll warn you though...you have so many dessert options you may have to allow extra time and plan on leaving with a bag or box of something to have later too! They even have a few tables outside for seating and it was a gorgeous day in October to eat outside!!

  • Charles K.

Fresh pastries, cookies and cakes. Food on the restaurant side was real good too!!

If you happen to visit the Golden Brown on a Monday, make sure to order a few of the nutty telephones. They are possibly the best donut/danish I've ever tasted. So good.
